E-Commerce: When a Business Does NOT Need a “Classic” Online Store

December 26, 2025

In recent years, e-commerce in Ukraine has become the norm. Entrepreneurs search for “e-commerce”, “electronic commerce”, “electronic business and e-commerce”, “e-commerce market”, “e-commerce models”, “electronic trade”, “internet commerce”, “e-commerce (short)”. Often these queries share a single expectation: “I need my own online store”.

But the truth is that a classic e-commerce website is not always the best answer. Sometimes a business can do just fine with marketplaces, social media or a hybrid model. In this article, we’ll look at when it’s worth slowing down the order for a “turnkey website” and first taking a sober look at your online business.

1. Why “Your Own Online Store” Is Not Always the First Step

Queries such as “how to open my online store”, “how to create my online store”, “online store from scratch”, “create online store”, “how to open an online shop”, “open an online store”, “create an online-store site” sound logical. But an online store is not just a page with products.

It involves:

  • ongoing website maintenance;
  • integration with payment and delivery services;
  • analytics, advertising, SEO;
  • a support function that processes orders.

If a business is not ready for this workload, even a perfect e-commerce website will not deliver the expected result.

In some niches, it works better to have:

  • a marketplace (such as Prom, Rozetka, Etsy) that answers queries like “Prom.ua online store”, “how to create a shop on Prom”, “ready-made online business”;
  • a strong social media presence plus a CRM instead of a classic online store;
  • B2B e-commerce where the main channel is a closed catalog for partners, not a public website.

2. E-Commerce as an Extension of a Business Model, Not a “Trendy Add-On”

Queries like “online business from scratch”, “business on the internet”, “online business”, “online business ideas”, “internet business ideas”, “most profitable online business” are often driven by an illusion: “online will fix everything”. In reality, e-commerce does not save a weak business model; it exposes it.

There are several questions to answer before looking for a “free online-store website builder”:

  • What real value do we provide — beyond price?
  • Do we have an advantage over other e-commerce sites in our niche?
  • Are we ready for transparent comparison (price/quality/delivery), which is inevitable in online business?

Electronic business and e-commerce are about systematic work: from analytics and testing to marketing and customer service. The website is just one link in this chain.

3. When a Marketplace Is Better than Your Own Site

Popular phrases like “Prom.ua online shop”, “Prom.ua how to create a shop”, “Prom.ua open a store”, “create a shop on Prom” show a simple truth: for some businesses, a marketplace is the optimal starting point.

Especially when:

  • the business is testing a niche and is not sure that the product will “take off”;
  • there are no resources for separate website marketing;
  • the product primarily competes on price and availability rather than brand.

For small businesses in communities that work with BIG.U, it often makes more sense to first understand “selling through the internet” via marketplaces, and only then build “their own online store from scratch”.

4. When a Website Is Still Necessary

At the same time, there are situations where an e-commerce website is indispensable:

  • when you are building a brand rather than just trading a product;
  • when you operate in the B2B e-commerce segment, where partners expect a professional online storefront;
  • when the product is complex, requires detailed explanation, trust and content.

Here it becomes important to choose an e-commerce platform, ask questions like “which platform is best for building an online store?” and think more broadly: not just “create an online-store site”, but build an e-business system in which the website, marketing and operations work together.

5. The Main Question: Not “Where to Build a Site?”, but “What and to Whom Are We Selling?”

If we summarize hundreds of queries — from “e-commerce what is it” to “ready-made business online” and “create an online store from scratch” — they almost always boil down to one question:

“How can I make my online business actually work, not just exist?”

The answer does not start with the “create site” button. It starts with an honest analysis of:

  • who your customer is;
  • which channels are more convenient for them — a website, marketplaces, social media;
  • whether you are ready to maintain the chosen format.

E-commerce is not about having a website at all costs. It is about choosing the right combination of tools for a specific business model.
